The public area with the most public function is the recreation area at the Dommel bank. Sitting stairs and wooden decking enable visitors to interact with the Dommel. The design integrates the fluctuations of the water level, as some of the stairs are able to overflood, together with the decking this ensures that users can get close to the water surface no matter its level. This area is a place to stay and meet each other as well as a flow-through area as the Fabrieksroute flows past the recreational stairs.
MASTERPLAN
In order to create a pleasant and healthy living climate in the city, a lot of attention and space is devoted to green space. The greenery can be used for recreation, is visually attractive, counteracts the urban heat island effect, and also ensures good water drainage and absorption. The vegetation used is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees with grasses that originally grew in this heathland and can be found on de Stratumseheide and the Vestdijk.

PUBLIC SQUARE & BOULEVARD
The public square in front of the monument functions as a public hub and as an entrance for several public facilities located among it. The area has a hybrid flow-through and attract function.

COMMUNITY COURTYARD

The community courtyard is primarily designed for the inhabitants of Schellink. The square is semipublic as it is also accessible for passers-by. During the nighttime, the courtyard will be closed for outsiders.
The courtyard functions as a social hub where the Schellink community can meet each other. A grass pit with all-around wooden decking to sit on. Inside the pit, a table tennis facility is applied together with a step-by-step raising green pergola that mimics the green gardens of Het College.

On either side of the courtyard are two narrow atria, in which the apartments' balconies are located. These make the transition between semi-public outdoor space and private indoor space smoother.
The connection between man and nature is important in the Schellink design. That is why greenery will also be available for residents of the higher floors. This will be in the form of shared roof gardens, which all border the courtyard that ensures a visual connection.
The roof areas can be used by residents to meet, chat and enjoy the sun and they can be used for city gardening to feel more connected
