BACKGROUND

The design choices of SCHELLINK require a deeper understanding of the history of the Schellensfabriek, as well as its surroundings and urban context. On this page background information can be found.

HISTORY

LOCATION

The Schellensfabriek plot is located in the heart of Eindhoven, south-east to the city center. Schellens is easily accessible since it is located next to the inner-city ring: de Vestdijk, an important traffic connection that provides access to the city center for cyclists and motorists. In addition, the plot is next to the most important green arteries of the city, through which the Dommel river flows.

These two important axes intersect right next to the plot on its northern side.

HIstory

The history of the Schellens factory is rather diverse, it all started in 1902 when Leo Schellens founded the fabric for the production of Trijp, which was used as the upholstery in trains and cars. Over the years the company flourished and expanded regularly, as can be seen in the illustration. This resulted in a random collection of styles and building typologies, mostly focused on its function. Therefore degrading the quality of space. An interesting expansion is the one in 1949 when the Vestdijk moved to the West to accumulate the growth of the city of Eindhoven. The full renovation of the factory and the addition of an extra production hall was paid for by the municipality. During the renovation, the façade design on the Vestdijk side was based on the unique historical façade of the Monumental building in the South, giving the Schellens factory the industrial character it still has today.

LOCATION
DOMMEL

DOMMEL

The Dommel is known as the river of Eindhoven and flows through the city like a green vein. In industrial times, many factories settled next to the river, as did Schellens. Along the Dommel the currently derelict Fabrieksroute flows, which should lead visitors to cultural sights.

More precious cultural establishments can be found on the riverbank, such as het Van Abbe Museum and Monastery de Mariënhage with accompanying Augustijnenkerk. South of Schellens, the Dommel flows through het Stadswandelpark, where people come for recreation.

The quality of the Dommel valley is weakening at the level of the Schellens plot. Here - as opposed to cyclists - along with the Dommel no attractive connection for pedestrians is offered.
