Integral DESIGN

During the design process of SCHELLINK multiple disciplines made interconnected design choices together. This page navigates you through some of these integral design choices made during the process.

SHED ROOFS

TWO ATRIA

Another element in the design that required collaboration is the shed roof. To increase the sustainably produced energy on the main building, the option to apply a shed roof instead of a flat roof was considered. Heat losses through the roof would increase due to the larger surface area, but the advantages of increased surface area for the solar panels outweighed that significantly.

From an architectural point of view this adaptation is quite interesting. On the north side of the shed roofs, windows can be placed to allow for more daylight to enter on the top floor. The sloping surfaces and oblique lines create a more playful facade. Additionally some of the current factory buildings have shed roofs, so the connection with the heritage of the plot is strengthened.

To support the shed roof the timber structure has to become more complex. Instead of timber stud walls, rafters transfer the vertical forces of the shed roofs to the structure below. Thicker posts are needed at the end sides of the prefabricated façade panel to transfer these concentrated loads.

Due to the increased complexity of the structure and the increased amount of building material needed for the structure and roofing structure, the costs of the building increase. This negatively affects the profit for the real estate discipline.

MATERIAL REUSE & RECYCLING

Atrium

TWO ATRIA

The two atria connected to the main buildings in the middle of the plot form a soft barrier between the courtyard and the indoor spaces. In the glass-enclosed cavities, the stack effect improves natural ventilation and thus reduces the operational energy demand. The atrium to the south also prevents overheating.

These atria create the possibility of having semi-private indoor balconies that will promote connectedness between the residents. These balconies also increase the sales value of the residential apartments adjacent to them.

The atria are supported by a glulam beam and column structure that minimizes the use of steel connection plates and uses mostly interlocking timber elements to reduce the embodied energy of the structure. Also in the curtain wall, the use of aluminium is minimized as much as possible.

One of the space-defining elements on the plot is the masonry wall on the Vestdijk site of the plot. In collaboration, it was decided to keep this wall and reuse it as an exterior façade. Also the brewery façade on the North side of the plot will be reused. In this way the historical architectural expression of the plot is incorporated in the new design. Most of the new facades will consist of thermally hardened timber, which represents the sustainable future of the area and of Eindhoven. By reusing the masonry walls as exterior facade, less new building material is required. This is beneficial for the energy neutrality of the plot.

Redundant brickwork and concrete was crushed and used as aggregate for the new concrete elements, such as new foundations and ground floors.
